Easy clues
Fairly easy hike with one moderate accent, about 3/4 hour (1.2 miles) to letterbox
Checked: March 19, 2006

Directions to trailhead: Route 287 to Skyline Drive, exit 57. About 1/10 mile on the left is the parking lot for the Ramapo Mountain State Forest. The MacEvoy Trail is named for Clifford MacEvoy who was a contractor for large public works and whose estate became the Ramapo Mountain State Forest.

From the south end of the parking area, take the MacEvoy Trail (blue blaze), which climbs to Ramapo Lake in about 0.6 mile, 500 feet short of the dam. The trail follows the gravel road along the north shore. It goes right at the Y junction and heads uphill through stone gateposts. At about 1.1 miles from the trailhead, the MacEvoy trail goes into the woods on the left along with the Cannonball Trail (white C on red circle). Follow the two trails to where they have been diverted to the right above an area which is often flooded. Soon you will come to a small tree on the right with single blazes of both the MacEvoy and Cannonball Trails. From this tree go 17 walking steps North to the top of the hill where you will see a tree that splits into two trunks a few feet off the ground. Beginning with your back to this tree go about 35 walking steps at 20 degrees to another tree. With your back to this tree go 15 walking steps at 109 degrees (walk through the double rock.) Under a pile of small rocks near the ground you will find our letterbox. You can now go back to the gravel road, continue up the hill to the white trail, and hunt for the Castle Point and Cannonball Letterboxes; or do one of the other options listed below:

Continue along the trail a short distance to where the MacEvoy Trail heads right eventually ending near a housing development (about another mile) or

Go left on the Cannonball Trail, return to the gravel road and head straight back to the parking lot by going left, or

Go left on the Cannonball Trail, return to the gravel road, go right on this shore trail (gravel road) and walk around the lake until you cross the dam.

Take the MacEvoy Trail back to the parking lot.

Adventures for Women is a not for profit organization which, among other things, encourages women to get out of doors and into the woods. We hike in many of New Jersey’s forests and have maintained the MacEvoy trail for many years. Some of our guides have gotten into letterboxing, and we now include it as one of our activities. This is our first plant, but as our members become more familiar with, and excited by, this great hobby, I’m sure there will be more.
