Ashantilly is located just off of GA Highway 99, adjacent to historic St. Andrews Cemetery, approximately 1.5 miles from the center of Darien. The Ashantilly Center, known as “Old Tabby,” sits on a beautiful 34-acre property filled with magnolias and moss-draped live oaks and overlooks the marshes of Black Island Creek.

Ashantilly was the mainland home of Thomas Spalding, a prominent business and political leader, and an innovative planter who made much of his fortune from Sea Island cotton. His main residence was on Sapelo Island. A descendent of Scottish royalty, he named the Regency-style Darien home Ashantilly after one of his family’s holdings in Scotland. After Spalding died in 1851, Ashantilly suffered some hard times. It was damaged in the Civil War and abandoned for years before it was purchased and restored in 1870. It was in 1918, however, that William Haynes, Jr., the man who would forever leave his legacy here first arrived as a 10-year-old boy. Today, the Ashantilly Center is a non-profit educational and cultural historic site, organized and founded by William G. Haynes, Jr. Mr. Haynes was an artist, small letterpress printer (The Ashantilly Press), and environmentalist. His legacy, the Ashantilly Center, hosts cultural and historic events and workshops.

Ashantilly Center is located at 15591 GA Hwy 99, Darien, Georgia 31305. From Highway 99, turn onto the property and drive down the dirt road until you see a large yellow house. Park your car in the parking lot and walk towards the front of the house that faces a large yard filled with tall live oak trees dripping with Spanish moss. Face the house and walk towards the right side of the house. There you will find our Native Garden made possible by a grant from Savannah Presbytery M. K. Pentecost Ecology Fund. Take the white pebble walkway and walk until you are facing the double French doors. There are large border rocks that surround the garden. You will find the box within the rocks on your left.

If you would like a tour of the house, print shop, or both please call us at (912) 437-4473 or email us at ashantillycenter@gmail.com to schedule our visit.
